A Legendary Whiskey Dating Back to 1780
Jameson is one of the most popular blended Irish whiskeys in the world, and it has been in production in Ireland since 1780, The distillery, which was originally located in Dublin, has since moved to Cork. The distillery is now open to the public, offering a Jameson whiskey tour, where you can learn more about the extensive history of the company.
A Long History
John Jameson was a Scottish businessman who, in 1786, became the manager of the Bow Street Distillery that belonged to the Stein family. At the time, the distillery was producing around 30,000 gallons every year, and by the beginning of the 20th Century, it was the second biggest whiskey producer in the whole of Ireland. It was even one of the biggest in the world, producing roughly 1 million gallons every year.
At this time, Dublin was the home for whiskey production – it was producing most of the whiskey enjoyed all over the world, and Jameson whiskey drinks were quickly becoming one of the most popular varieties. Whiskey was the second most popular spirit in the whole world, and after Jameson became the most popular whiskey in the world, it maintained its popularity and significance right into the 21st Century.
That doesn’t mean, however, that the company hasn’t been without its setbacks. In fact, Jameson was damaged by a social movement known as the Temperance Movement. This was a campaign against the consumption of alcohol, which reduced demand and even caused a trade war with Britain, stopping Jameson from being able to export its whiskey to the rest of the Commonwealth. It was also hurt by the 1920 Prohibition in the United States. Jameson was unable to sell its products to a huge section of the world for many years.
In 1966, John Jameson merged his company with John Powers and Cork Distillers, which created the Irish Distillers Group. A decade later in 1976, the Bow Street Jameson distillery, as well as its John’s Lane distillery, were both closed. The distilleries were replaced with the New Midleton Distillery, which today produces most of the Irish whiskey for Jameson, Midleton, Spot, and other brands throughout Ireland. The new distillery is adjoined to the Old Midleton Distillery, which was the original home of the Paddy whiskey label. It is here where the Jameson Experience Visitor Centre is located, giving visitors an insight into how the whiskey is produced, and providing a detailed tour of the company’s history.

Located in County Cork, the James Distillery Midleton offers visitor tours that explain the history of Jameson’s Irish Whiskey. Here, you can take a look at the production process behind the scenes, discovering how whiskey is made, how it’s stored in the casks, and how it is later prepared for bottling. There is even a premium whiskey tasting experience, where you can learn how to really make the most and understand the flavor profiles of Irish whiskey.
Jameson Irish Whiskey currently offers at least eight different varieties, including the James 12-Year-Old Special Reserve, the Gold Reserve, and the 18-Year-Old Limited Reserve. There is also the 12-Year-Old Distillery Reserve, which is available in the Ireland visitors center, or through their online store.
The Jameson Rarest Vintage Reserve uses the company’s rarest and oldest whiskey ingredients and components, making this a super-premium experience.
